Right wing Patrice Tardif will be the University of Maine’s representative in the second annual Shrine East-West College Hockey Classic at the Alfond Arena in Orono at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 9.
The nation’s top seniors will participate. Proceeds from the game will benefit the Shrine hospitals for burned and crippled children. Last year’s game, won by the East 6-5, raised approximately $12,000, said Will Rogers, president of the Anah Temple Shrine’s game committee.
“I’m happy for Patrice,” said Maine Coach Shawn Walsh. “He played very strong for us.”
Tardif, a native of St. Methode, Quebec, had 18 goals and 15 assists in 34 games and was Maine’s second-leading goal scorer and point-producer. He will play for the East.
Maine right wing Cal Ingraham and defenseman Jason Weinrich are alternates.
The West roster includes the leading scorers in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, Minnesota-Duluth’s Chris Marinucci, and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, Michigan’s David Oliver.
The East team includes the third-ranked goalies in Hockey East, UMass-Lowell’s Dwayne Roloson, and the ECAC, Brown’s Geoff Finch, and the ECAC’s second-leading scorer in Clarkson’s Craig Conroy.
“There’s a great list of players for both teams, especially in goal,” said Walsh. “The goaltenders are terrific. It’s going to be a much lower scoring game this year.”
Rogers said 2,500 tickets have been sold already and a skills competition has been added to the agenda. That will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, April 8, at the Alfond.
Tickets for the game are $12 and can be obtained from the sponsoring Anah Temple Shrine on Main Street in Bangor from noon to 4 p.m. on weekdays or by calling 989-5058.
