ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Senior catcher and tri-captain Lance Bean made his first career homer a significant one, a grand slam, and he drove in all five runs to power the Husson College Braves to a 5-2 win over Fitchburg State (Mass.) here Tuesday afternoon.
Bean had a double and a single to go with his grand slam for the Braves of Bangor, who are now 5-2 entering a Wednesday morning doubleheader against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Lakeland, Fla.
Bean hit his slam to left off a 1-2 fastball in the second inning to stake the Braves to a 4-0 lead. Bill Swift had reached on an error to open the inning; Mike McBride walked and Matt Eastman singled to left.
Sophomore righty Travis McKenney picked up the win in relief, allowing five hits and one run over 4 2/3 innings. He fanned two and walked one.
Troy Martin doubled and singled for Husson while 1-5 Fitchburg State received a double and two singles from Al Darcy.
