CHERRYFIELD — At the annual town meeting Monday, voters defeated a proposal that would have established a local board of assessment review, and would have given selectmen authority to appoint a three-member board.

Voting 49-29, by written ballot, townspeople defeated the proposed board that would have begun reviewing property tax abatement appeals in 1995.

Also defeated was a proposal that the town enter into an agreement with the Department of Economic Development for the purpose of updating the town’s comprehensive plan. The town’s share of the cost would have been $2,203.

Winning voter approval was the Cherryfield Improvement Committee’s plan to build a Charles Wakefield Memorial Bandstand on the old fire and ambulance lot in the downtown area. Improvements will be made to the lot for the purpose of creating a park for the public’s enjoyment. The town will assume responsibility for the park’s maintenance.
