Former University of Maine wing Bob Corkum, the leading scorer for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, has been lost for the rest of the season after a tendon above his right ankle was severed.

The Associated Press reported that team physician Dr. Robert Glousman performed surgery on Corkum at Centinela Hospital in Inglewood, Calif., Monday afternoon. Corkum will be inactive for at least three months.

Corkum was trying to kick the puck in the third period of Sunday’s 3-2 overtime win over Philadelphia. A Flyer going past Corkum skated over his ankle, rupturing the tendon.

The 6-foot-2, 212-pound Corkum, a former third-round draft pick of Buffalo, had 23 goals and 28 assists in 76 games this season.

He leads the team in goals and shorthanded goals, 3, as well as points.

The 26-year-old Corkum’s previous best NHL season was last year with six goals and four assists in 68 games for Buffalo.

“Bob has had a great season. He has been our most consistent player. He has been our on-ice leader,” said Anaheim vice-president and general manager Jack Ferreira.

Corkum, a center, is a fifth-year pro who had 56 goals and 75 assists in 159 career games for Maine.
