Sophie Cowan of Hurricane Swim Club and Sarah Kovenock of Canoe City Swim Club both turned in state-record swims and top-five finishes during the Eastern Zone Championships held at Princeton (N.J.) University Thursday through Saturday. Maine swimmers scored 31 points in the meet.

Cowan set three state records in the 10-and-under girls division. She placed third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:00.24, fourth in the 200 free in 2:11.34, and fifth in the 50 free in 27.94.

Kovenock established two state records in the girls 13-14 division. She swam the 50 freestyle in 24.61 seconds for a third and took third in the 100 free in 53.87.
