The Husson College baseball team won two out of three games over the weekend while Colby swept in-state rival University of Southern Maine in softball to highlight weekend action.
Husson sweeps Owls
At Bangor’s Mansfield Complex Saturday, the Husson Braves swept a doubleheader from the University of Maine-Presque Isle.
In the first game, Mike McBride and Lance Bean had two singles and 2 RBIs apiece as Husson defeated UM-Presque Isle 12-2.
The game was called after six innings due to the 10-run rule.
Sandy McCuala had a single and double, John Novak added two singles for Husson, and Troy Martin hit a three-run homer. Jamie Pete scattered four hits and struck out seven for the win.
Ken Ouelette led the Owls with two singles.
In the second game, Mike McBride’s two-run homer in the sixth broke a 4-4 tie, propelling Husson to a 7-5 victory.
Troy Martin and Matt Eastman had two singles apiece, and Bill Swift added a three-run homer in the first. Pitcher Peter Allen was the complete-game winner as Husson improved to 11-4.
Gene Crokett had two singles and an RBI for 0-6 UMPI, while Darren Clukey added two singles.
Huskies 15, Braves 7
At Gorham Sunday, the University of Southern Maine rallied from a 7-0 deficit to win its sixth straight game.
Jason Lariviere had a two-run double while Tom Balzano and Jim Dimillo each had two-run singles to highlight a nine-run fourth for the Huskies – who took the lead for good.
Balzano had four singles and the double to pace 15-7 Southern Maine, Matt Vetree hit a three-run homer and two singles, Lariviere had two singles and a double. Chris Ackerman and Tony Miner added two singles each. Tim Sullivan pitched 3 2/3 innings of two-hit relief for the win.
Sandy McCuaig paced the 11-5 Braves with three singles.
Softball
Colby 10-6, USM 2-4
At Gorham Saturday, Colby racked University of Southern Maine pitching for 23 hits in a doubleheader sweep.
In the first game, Karen Ackley allowed seven hits and two runs over seven innings as Colby knocked off USM 10-2.
Ackley pitched six shutout innings for Colby, while Chris Downing and Katy Bakeman contributed two singles apiece.
Briana Hadlock broke up the shutout bid with a seventh-inning homer and added a single, while Sue LaPoint hit two singles.
Kayla Baker broke a 4-4 tie with a seventh-inning RBI single, propelling Colby to a 6-4 win.
Downing, Baker, and Becca Apollon had two singles apiece for Colby, which improves to 5-4. Ackley got the win.
Hannah Hinkley led 1-6 USM with three singles. Jen Bailey tripled and singled.
Maine, BC split
At Boston Sunday, Kris Gorman’s three-run triple in the eighth broke open a 1-1 tie as the University of Maine defeated Boston College 5-1 in the second game of a doubleheader.
In game one, Kelly Cross doubled home Deb Nasitha with two outs in the sixth as Boston College defeated the Black Bears 2-1.
Nasitha singled and tripled to pace Boston College, while Liz Walker was the winning pitcher
Angel Gamache tied the game with a two-out RBI single in the fourth. Kris Gorman and Kelly Dow had two singles each, while Shelly Lefevre added a single and a double.
Gorman’s triple highlighted a 4-RBI effort in the second game, while Lisa Swain and Gamache added two singles each for the Black Bears – now 19-11.
Kelly Cross had two singles, including an RBI single to tie the game in the sixth for 15-9 Boston College.
Salve Regina sweeps Husson
At Newport, R.I., Sunday, host Salve Regina twice rallied in the seventh inning to gain a doubleheader sweep.
In the first game, Shorey Ivey singled home the winning run for Salve Regina. Ivey had two singles and 3 RBI to lead the offense.
Christine Longtin had a single, a double and an RBI for Husson, while Maryanne Lampart added an RBI single.
The second game featured more late inning heroics. Jodi Aissis singled home Karen Ursini with the winning run in the seventh.
Ursini tripled home the tying run while also adding a double -pacing 7-1 Salve Regina.
Lampart sparked 4-5 Husson with two singles and a triple, good for 2 RBIs. Amanda Pomerleau was the tough-luck loser, striking out nine.
