Softball: Central Connecticut sweeps UMaine

ORONO – Central Connecticut State allowed only two runs in sweeping a softball doubleheader Sunday from the University of Maine, winning 5-1 and 17-1.

The Black Bears split a doubleheader Saturday with Boston University, winning the first game 3-0 and losing the second 4-2.

In the first game, Karen Sweezey scattered six hits over seven innings, pacing the Blue Devils.

Central Connecticut scored all of its runs in the first inning, using five hits and two UMaine errors.

Angel Gamache singled home Kelly Dow in the seventh inning to avert the shutout.

In the second game, Amy Crispino had five singles to highlight a 16-hit attack as the 12-12-1 Blue Devils earned the sweep.

Kelly Harrington scored on a wild pitch in the third for the Black Bear run.

Husson, UNE split

Amanda Pomerleau scattered three hits, striking out four and walking none as the Husson College Braves salvaged a doubleheader split with the University of New England with a 13-1 nightcap victory at Lengyel Field in Orono on Sunday.

UNE won the first game 12-4.

In the second game, Lori Yanush had a triple, two singles and an RBI for the winners, now 5-8.

Anne Haskell led UNE to the first-game win, going 4-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and three runs.

Chris Longtin and Yanush led Husson with two singles each.

St. Joe’s sweeps UMPI

At Standish Sunday, Dani Waterman and Shelly Zanfagna each pitched one-hitters as St. Joseph’s defeated the University of Maine-Presque Isle 10-0 and 40-0 in a college softball doubleheader. Both games ended after five innings because of the NAIA’s eight-run rule.

Laurie powered 13-1 St. Joe’s with six hits and eight RBI on the day, while Emily Burill had four hits and seven RBI.

Heather Brewer broke up Zanfagna’s no-hitter with a fourth-inning double for 1-7 UMPI.

Baseball

Husson edges Bowdoin

At Mansfield Complex in Bangor Saturday, Jamie Pete scattered three hits over seven innings to lead Husson to a 5-4 win over Bowdoin in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader.

The second game was called after three innings due to rain.

Pete allowed only two earned runs to improve his record to 4-1. Mike McBride paced the 13-5 Braves with a single and a double, while Lance Bean added 2 RBI and Bill Swift hit a two-run homer in the third.

Chris Gaffney and Mike McCormick each had an RBI double for 5-6 Bowdoin.
