AMITY — Route 1 between Houlton and Amity will draw a crowd Friday when more than 60 volunteers pitch in to remove roadside litter.
The litter brigade was organized to observe Earth Day.
“We’re trying to show where the young people of the community can get together to make a difference with no ulterior motives,” said Art Howell, chief executive officer of the A.E. Howell Conservation Center in Amity.
Until recently, snow covered most of the debris on the rural stretch of Route 1.
“After the snow started melting and I got a look at all the litter, I started wondering if I had bitten off more than I could chew,” Howell said. “But they’re a good bunch of hard-working kids.”
Area youth groups with the help of the Maine Department of Transportation and the State Police will walk the road and pick up litter. DOT trucks will deliver it to the conservation center where crews will separate the recyclables and dump the rest into a trailer on loan from White Knight Solid Waste.
The day will start at 8 a.m. when the troops marshall at the old Lambert School in Houlton. It should finish around 4 p.m. For more information call Howell at 532-6880.
