More than 1,000 high school students participated in the Maine Association of Math Leagues’ 19th annual Maine State Math Meet held April 12 at Bates College in Lewiston. Twenty-three high schools competed in Division A and 24 in each of Divisions B, C and D.

The first seven places in Division A were won by: Oxford Hills, first; Portland, second; Bangor, third; South Portland, fourth; Bonney Eagle, fifth; Brunswick, sixth; and Cony, seventh.

In Division B: first place was won by Winslow; second, Gary-New Gloucester; third, Caribou; fourth, Medomak Valley; fifth, Windham; sixth, John Bapst Memorial; and seventh, Lincoln Academy.

Placing first through seventh in Division C were: Mattanawcook; Dexter; Stearns; George Stevens; Orono; Maranacook and Winthrop.

Division D winners, from first through seventh respectively, were: Lee Academy; St. Dominic Regional; Vinalhaven; Falmouth; Deer Isle-Stonington; Monmouth Academy and Machias Memorial.

Individual awards by class also were presented. The top three winners and their high schools were: freshmen, first, Richard Haynes of Mattawancook Academy; second, Iain Becker, Bangor; and Gina Marca, Stearns. Sophomores: John Gaspar, Noble, first; Robert Gerry, Mattanawcook, second; and Ian Swett, Bangor, third. Juniors, Ben M. Davis, Maranawcook, first; Nate Dailey, Gray-New Gloucester, second; and Chris Coyne, South Portland, third. Seniors, first, Paul Donahoe, Winslow; second, Christian Rioux, Monmouth Academy; and third, Jason Hallett, Mattanawcook.

Two individual recognition awards were presented to the students scoring the highest and second-highest overall scores in the five MAML meets held during the season prior to the state meet. Presented with the George Millay Math Award for highest score was Jason Hallett of Mattanawcook, and receiving the Nola Urban Math Award for second-highest score was Ben M. Davis of Maranacook.

The Business Education Assocation of Maine, Region F, announced the results of its annual contest held April 7. First-place winners and their high schools were: accounting I, Kathleen McCabe, John Bapst Memorial; accounting II, Danielle Hopple, Brewer; business mathematics, Arthur Fletcher, Central; keyboarding I, Erica Kate Johnson, Bangor Christian; keyboarding II, Jennifer Hichborn, Brewer; shorthand-speed writing, Heidi Price, Brewer; and word processing, Ann Redman, Hermon.

While most students enjoy a vacation this week, a few are traveling and studying abroad. Seven Orono High School Spanish Club students and their chaperone are on a trip to Spain where they’ll visit Madrid for three days and live with families in Azuga for the remainder of their three-week stay. Paris was the first stop for 13 OHS French Club students and chaperone. They also will spend two weeks in Brittany attending school and visiting the area.

Several area schools sent members to the Key Club Convention in Springfield, Mass., April 8-10, including four from Nokomis Regional High School. Members of the Nokomis Jazz Ensemble were invited to attend a Maynard Ferguson concert April 16 and 17, and those from the Nokomis Taxidermy Club will attend a taxidermy convention April 21 in North Carolina.

To help the Red Cross and the earthquake victims in California, the Opportunities Awareness Program at Nokomis Regional held a rock-a-thon from 9 a.m. April 16 through 9 a.m. April 18. Rockers provided their own rocking chairs and watched movies for the 48 hours.

Only one concert this week, but it’s a special one. The Maine Youth Jazz Ensemble, directed by Isi Rudnick of the University of Maine at Augusta, will present a concert at 7 p.m. April 23, at Nokomis Regional High School in Newport. Students from eight high schools comprise the ensemble and are preparing for the Hot Steamed Jazz Festival in Essex, Conn., in June.
