BANGOR – Jamie Pete’s five-inning no-hitter was the highlight Thursday afternoon as Husson College swept a baseball doubleheader from of the University of Maine-Presque Isle.
The wins, 9-0 in the opener and 12-1 in the nightcap, allowed the Braves to set a school record for wins in a season with 19.
Pete struck out seven and walked eight in the second game, which was stopped because of the 10-run rule. Sandy McCuaig and John McCarty ripped a single and double each for the Braves. UMPI’s only run came after Pete walked the bases full in the seventh, then threw a wild pitch.
In the first game, Mike Kirby struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter in the Braves’ win. Matt Eastman drove in two runs with a single and a double, and Jeff Fogg singled and doubled, adding an RBI.
Brian Holman stroked two singles for the Owls.
Softball
UMF sweeps Husson
At Farmington, the Beavers won the doubleheader, beating Husson 5-2 in the first game and 8-3 in the second.
In the opener, UMF catcher Gail Sanborn had the game-winner with a three-run homer in the third inning. Lori Yanush and doubled in one run in the fourth and singled.
Sanborn continued strong in the nightcap with a double and a triple, complemented by Krista Meyer’s two-run triple in the third. For Husson, Marianne Lampart (2-4) and Denise Schrier were the repeat hitters with singles.
