ORONO – The Winslow High School Black Raiders served notice that they are poised and ready to defend their state Class B schoolboy baseball championship next month.
Ace righthander Marc Hachey scattered seven hits and struck out 12 and the Raiders made Orono pay dearly for their four infield errors, scoring five unearned runs en route to a 7-2 victory over the Riots here Friday.
Winslow is now 14-1 while Orono fell to 10-4 including two losses to Winslow.
The 6-foot, 185-pound Hachey, now 5-1, walked only one while throwing 69 strikes among his 99 pitches. One of the runs was unearned. He is 4-0 against Orono the past two seasons.
Hachey was exceptional in the clutch as the Riots went 0-for-7 against him with men in scoring position.
“When they had people in scoring position, I didn’t want to fool around with my curve in case of a passed ball. So I just tried to put something extra on my fastball,” said the Colby College-bound Hachey.
“This was definitely one of my better outings of the season,” added Hachey. “My arm felt great today. I’ve had a week and a half since my last start and that definitely helped me a lot.”
Hachey’s curve got better as the game progressed.
“He definitely threw well,” said Orono senior shortstop Marc Halsted. “His biggest asset is he knows how to hit the corners. He knows how to spot the ball and that’s relatively rare in Eastern Maine Class B baseball.”
Winslow took the lead for good with two unearned runs in the first inning. Greg Michaud reached on Halsted’s fielding error and scored on Aaron Peters’ long two-out triple to right center off loser Nate Ballard, 3-2.
“I was looking for a fastball but he threw me a curve,” said Peters. “I thought it was just a routine fly ball when I hit it.”
Hachey followed by bouncing an RBI single to center.
Michaud opened the two-run third inning with his first homer of the season, a blast to center off what he described as a “nice pitch right down the middle.”
Jason Maxwell singled and, an error and a wild pitch later, he scored on Peters’ sacrifice fly.
Orono got an unearned run in the bottom of the third but Winslow sewed up the win with three fifth-inning runs without the benefit of a hit.
Two walks, three of Winslow’s six stolen bases, a foul sacrifice fly by Greg Dunbar and two errors allowed two Winslow runs to score.
Halsted’s single and Mark Thibodeau’s RBI triple delivered Orono’s final run.
Stinson and Halsted had two hits apiece for Orono and Ballard pitched well in defeat, finishing with a five-hitter.
