Machias to relive ’50s with car show, dance

MACHIAS — The ’50s was a time of poodle skirts, greased-back hair, fuzzy dice and hula-hoops. Timeless cruising machines ushered in the era of car hops and drive-in movies. The ’50s also saw the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, and the meteoric rise of Elvis Presley.

Much of the ’50s will be experienced again June 18 in Machias, with daylong activities centered around an antique auto show and Elvis dance.

The event, presented by the Maine Obsolete Auto League and sponsored by the Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, begins with the car show 8 a.m. to about 4 p.m. in the Machias Savings Bank parking lots downtown.

The auto club will cruise the downtown district in a motorcade at 1 p.m.

Car hops and ’50s music will keep the memories alive at Flo’s Take Out in East Machias. From 7 to 10 p.m. in the Whitney’s Garage parking lot in Machias, disc jockey Tom Brady will spin the sounds of the king for an Elvis dance, complete with favorite Elvis foods and memorabilia provided by the Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce.

Admission to the dance, which includes Elvis trivia and lip-sync contests, is $2.50. Any “live” sightings of Elvis will be purely coincidental. For more information, call 255-4402.
