I was disappointed in the coverage the Bangor Daily News said they would give the Gavin-Fowler-Tupper-Stairs VFW Post 3381 of Old Town, for the state convention held in Bangor and Old Town on June 10, 11 and 12.
The item placed in section D4 on Monday, June 13, sounded like a political rally.
There was no mention of our post, which hosted the convention, which you referred to as a conference. No mention that John Trembley, a member of Post 3381, would be the new state commander. No mention of the huge parade in Old Town last Saturday with hundreds participating. But you could fill three-fourths of a page that same day with a Doughnut Festival, and with a picture of a clown.
Yes, I know the veterans are “aging,” but what about the “younger” veterans, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Desert Storm? These men are also veterans who belong to our post.
The politicians and other notables who attended the convention did so because they wanted to pay tribute to the veterans, and not to get a vote. We need their support in the Legislature.
The Ladies Auxiliary of our post also give time and energy to the veterans. Where would we be today without these men who fought for our freedom? We did get coverage on television and radio. Maybe next time, when the VFW has another event, you will give us better coverage.
Since I’m not a professional journalist, I have to go to the only sources available. I just gave it my best shot. Katie Clarke Publicity Chairman for the VFW Convention Costigan
