Clothesline Project

I am writing to hopefully clear up any misconceptions about the cancellation of the Clothesline Project display originally scheduled for June 2, 3 and 11 at Eastern Maine Technical College’s Rangeley Hall. First, I would like to apologize for any inconvenience and confusion generated by the last-minute cancellation of our display.

Since the May 28-29 article appeared in the Bangor Daily News, we’ve had many calls from the general public and from therapists. We have also received calls from women who are in therapy, who were encouraged to view the project and consider making a shirt as part of their healing process. All concerned were most disappointed at the cancellation, especially after having made plans to travel from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont.

Many callers have held the Clothesline Project responsible for raising expectations through pre-event publicity and then canceling the display at the last minute. The decision was beyond our control as it was unilaterally made by personnel in charge of the workshop schedule at EMTC.

The Clothesline Project is a grass-roots organization that depends on the interests and goodwill of the community to spread the word about our work and about the epidemic of violence against women. It is also that very community that, in large part, provides the financial base we need to facilitate this network of more than 200 projects. … Carol A.
