Ranger says alcohol factor in fatal accident

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK — Alcohol and excessive speed appear to be factors in a single-vehicle accident Saturday that left a 29-year-old Northeast Harbor man dead, a park ranger said.

Jim Grover, supervisory park ranger, said that the accident occurred around 1 a.m. Saturday on Park Loop Road near the Jordan Pond House. He said Scott C. Graves, 29, was traveling from Bar Harbor to Seal Harbor in a 1987 BMW sedan when he apparently lost control of the vehicle on a curve.

The car struck several coping stones along the side of the road and rolled over. Graves, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Mount Desert Island Hospital.

Graves’ father, Gerard Graves, 52, also of Northeast Harbor, who was a passenger in the car, received minor injuries in the incident. He was treated at Mount Desert Island Hospital and released. Gerard Graves was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Park rangers were assisted at the scene by the Mount Desert fire and police departments and the Northeast Harbor Ambulance crew.

Grover said that with the advent of the tourist season, motorists should be cautious. “This is the third vehicle accident in two weeks that has resulted in a rollover, and certainly this was the most serious. The park averages about 60 motor accidents a year. Fortunately, most of them are relatively minor. We have not had a traffic fatality in a long time, and we urge caution on the park roads,” he said.
