Strong finish lifts Young to 3K win Cautious Ganiel tops women’s field

BANGOR – In all his years of running, Jeff Young hadn’t seen anything like it.

A 3-kilometer, mostly downhill sprint along a course crammed with spectators. Call it a road racer’s dream. Call it the Greater Bangor Fourth of July 3K Road Race.

Young, the former University of Maine distance-running standout from Gorham, was pushed by Team Maine training partner Tim Wakeland of East Holden through a quick 4:22 first mile and then kicked home the final eight-tenths of a mile to win Monday’s race in 8 minutes, 31 seconds.

Wakeland, a five-time winner of this race, finished second in 8:32. Coincidentally, Young and Wakeland wore bib numbers 1 and 2, respectively in the third race of the Bangor Daily News Charities Running Series.

Andy Beardsley of Ellsworth was third in 8:59, Rod Clarke was fourth in 9:03, and Roly McSorley was fifth in 9:12.

Seventeen-year-old Gladys Ganiel, who will be a senior at Narraguagus High School in Harrington in the fall, bested the woman’s field in 10:09. Sheila Hodges of Hampden was second in 10:58 while Sarah Dominick was third in 11:02.

Young, who normally spends his Fourth of July running the Bridgton Four on the Fourth race along with 1,000-plus other runners, was impressed with Bangor’s race.

“You get that Boston Marathon-type feel where everybody is lining the road and clapping,” Young said of the crowd which were lining up to watch the post-race parade. “Usually, road races have about five people spread over the whole course. I like this race quite a bit. It’s a lot of fun.”

Young and Wakeland pulled away from the start, with Young gaining the upper hand by only a step at the mile mark.

Over the span of the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge which separates Bangor and Brewer, Young picked up the pace, building a 10-meter lead through downtown Bangor.

“He stayed about the same place behind me until the last quarter (mile),” Young said. “He was always a step or two behind me.”

Wakeland said he never had a chance to pass Young.

“We had talked about running it together, but I told him after the first mile just to do his own thing,” Wakeland said. “(The first mile) seemed slower than it was. But it felt comfortable and controllable. We could have gone faster, but the payback is a lot worse over the final half of the race.”

Ganiel, running her first Bangor 3K race, went out hard while keeping a cautious attitude toward the race.

“I’m pleased. It was a nice downhill course,” Ganiel said. “The most difficult part was not knowing where I was and how much further I had to go. I don’t know the landmarks so I wasn’t familiar with where to start kicking or what type of strategy to use.”

Ganiel, who has spent the last two weeks at basketball camp, hit the mile split in 5:10, just missing the sub-5 minute mark.

“I didn’t want to run too fast and then die,” she said. “I’ve done that before.”

All told, 231 runners competed in the race – a total which has been up from the last few years.

“That’s high for the last few years,” said race director Dave Torrey. “I’m very pleased with it.”
