BANGOR (AP) — Two men who successfully smuggled more than 2 tons of marijuana into the country by Mount Desert Island were sentenced recently to different penalties of four and five years in prison.
Harold E. Leasure, 42, of Florida was sentenced in U.S. District Court to five years in prison followed by two years of supervised release and a $3,000 fine.
Alan D. Clark, 47, of North Carolina also was sentenced to four years in prison followed by five years of supervised release.
Leasure, who once lived in Orrington, rented a cottage in August 1989 in Pretty Marsh on Mount Desert Island. The cottage was used by smugglers waiting for the 5,000 pounds of marijuana to arrive. It was also used to store the marijuana while it was being prepared to distribute to other parts of the United States, including New York and Chicago, said U.S. Attorney Jay P. McCloskey.
