CALAIS – Old Town-Orono gave up only seven hits in 12 innings of baseball and solidified its position atop the Zone 1 American Legion rankings with a 5-1, 25-2 doubleheader sweep of Calais at DelMonaco field Saturday.

In the first game, the 11-0 Twins used a three-hitter by Nate Ballard to turn back Calais. Ballard struck out five and walked four. Ronnie Coombs rapped a pair of singles and knocked in two runs for the winners, while Gary Sibley had a two-run homer and Marc Halsted singled twice and scored twice.

Brian McArthur drove in the lone Calais run with a fourth-inning single.

In the second game, Old Town-Orono’s bats came to life as they pounded out 20 hits in a contest stopped after five innings due to the 12-run rule.

Ray Houston held Calais at bay, scattering four hits and striking out four batters, while Chris Hashey drilled a double and two singles to knock in four runs. Brian Goody added two singles and a double. Andy Trice doubled and singled, Marc Halsted and Charlie Hite singled twice each and Gagrand slam. Tim LePage had a three-run homer.

Joe Viselli and McArthur hit solo home runs for Calais.

Trenton sweeps Skowhegan

At Trenton, the Acadians won the second game 8-6 Saturday to secure a doubleheader sweep over Skowhegan.

Adam Gray had two singles, a double, and an RBI to lead Trenton. Both Jared Polchies and Will Holloway added a single and two RBIs, and Jerry Gray contributed a triple and an RBI.

For Skowhegan, Chris Morris hit two singles, and Howie Pike and Adam Fitzpatrick had RBIs.

In the first game, Holloway hit a single, double, and had two RBIs for the Acadians. Matt McDonald had two hits and two runs, and J.T. Loomis added three RBIs.

Greg Domarecki had two singles and two RBIs, and Chris Morris hit three singles for Skowhegan.

At Belfast, Bobby Hughes pitched a six-hitter in the first game and drove in five runs on the day to key a doubleheader sweep for Waldo County Saturday.

In the first game, Hughes struck out 11 and walked three and helped his own cause with a three RBIs on a double and a single for the winners. Matt Varney bashed a three-run homer and Chris Steiner added a solo homer and a single.

Todd Tufts doubled and singled for Penquis, while McLean Poulin hit a solo home run.

In the second game, Jack Gallagher had a solo home run, a single and a triple, driving in three runs, for Waldo. George Tripp added a double and two singles, while Hughes had three singles and two RBIs.

Deron Smith ripped a three-run homer and two singles for Penquis. Poulin added a double and a single.

Molunkus 4-9, Downeast 1-1

At Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Brett Brown and Dave Foran picked up complete-game victories in the Travelers’ doubleheader sweep Sunday in Eastern Maine Amateur Baseball League action.

In the first game, Brown fanned five, while Mark O’Clair rapped a pair of singles. Jeff Bowden added a double for the winners, while Randy Harris singled and drove in two runs.

Matt Alaimo and Ron Mayo hit three singles apiece for Downeast.

In the second game, Foran struck out five and held the Yankees to three hits. Troy Martin hit a home run and two singles, while Randy Harris had three singles. Mike Austin drilled a three-run homer, Burt Marsden singled and doubled, and Bill Swift singled twice.
