HERMON – Jon Austin of Otis spent most of Saturday night with four-time track champion John Kalel in his rearview mirror and ended up winning the Late Model Sportsman 50-lap Midseason Championship Race at Speedway 95.

Austin, the division’s points leader, held off the challenges of Kalel, of Orrington, while Gary Smith of Bangor finished third.

Seekins holds off Burns at Unity

At Unity Raceway, Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs passed pole-sitter Art Beam after 15 laps and dueled with Jimmy Burns for the next 20 circuits en route to a Late Model Sportsman win Saturday.

Seekins passed Burns with four laps to go and held on for the victory. Steven Nelson of Albion moved up to take second, while Beam, of Levant, took third. Burns dropped to fourth.

At Spud Speedway in Caribou, Richie Harris of Caribou took the lead with six laps to go and held off a furious charge by Dale St. Peter of Caribou to take the Sportsman feature by a car-length Sunday.
