BANGOR – Don Robertson of Dallas opened some eyes at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course Wednesday when he posted a 9-under-par 62 during the Greater Bangor Open pro-am.
Robertson’s score is believed by Austin Kelly, who has been the pro at Bangor Muni since it opened in 1964, to be a course record.
The card Robertson turned in included a 7-under-par finish on the final six holes that gave him a 29 on the back nine.
Robertson, who teed off at mid-morning, opened his day slowly. He parred the first two holes, then bogeyed the par-3 third hole. It was the last mistake on his card.
A birdie on the par-5 fourth hole got him back to even par. He added a birdie on the par-3 sixth and another on the difficult par-4 eighth to make the turn in 33.
Three straight pars to open the back nine still gave no indication of what was in store.
After birdies on the short par-4 13th and the longer and tighter par-4 14th, Robertson made an eagle on the short par-5 15th. He birdied the last three holes for 62.
That score was one stroke better than the 63s of Lanny Wadkins in the 1971 GBO and at least three others shot in GBO pro-ams.
The trick now for Robertson is to continue that play into the official portion of the $50,000, 54-hole tournament that runs Thursday through Saturday.
Robertson has competed in the GBO for many years and has been a contender many times, but he has never won. His best finish was in 1979 when he finished as the low pro, one stroke behind amateur Mark Plummer of Manchester.
He was also second by two strokes to Gus Ulrich of Garner, N.C., in 1989. Last year, Robertson finished tied for fourth, four strokes behind Ulrich.
Wednesday, Robertson was two strokes better than Paul Antenucci of Paramus, N.J., and Jason Widener of Durham, N.C. Joe Browning Jr. of Wellesley, Mass., recorded a 65. Two-time winner Jeff Lewis of Sandwich, Mass., led a large group at 66.
Ulrich will try to become the first GBO champ to win a second straight year and to become the event’s first three-time champion.
One change for the tournament will be that the course will play to a par 69. Both par-5s on the back, 15 and 18, will be changed to par-4s.
Larry Rentz of Mamaroneck, N.Y., won the driving contest with a blast of 344.6 yards. Mike Nikitaidis of New Canaan, Conn., was second at 340.2, edging Ryan Baker of Saratoga Lake, Vt., whose longest drive was 340.19 yards.
