BANGOR – The cream rose to the top here Saturday and, as a result, Zone 1’s first- and second-place teams during the regular season will represent the zone in the eight-team double elimination State American Legion Baseball Tournament next Saturday in Standish.

Old Town-Orono’s defending two-time state champion Twins received a Picasso-like 18-strikeout, two-hit performance from lefthander Gary Sibley to whip Bangor 20-1 at the first-ever Zone 1 Tournament but the Comrades bounced back behind a gritty six-hitter from Mark McEwen and four defensive gems to eliminate Brewer 4-3.

In Saturday’s opener, Brewer eliminated Waldo County 7-2 as Tiger Stewart fired a six-hitter and Ben Jenkins and Mike Solovei had three hits apiece.

The Twins beat the Comrades 4-2 for the Zone 1 championship Sunday night.

In Sibley’s masterpice, he fanned at least two Comrade hitters in every inning except the fourth. He walked two and threw 81 strikes among his 126 pitches.

“This was my best game of the summer,” said Sibley. “I kept the ball low and kept it on the corners. I hung a curve to (Matt) Kinney (for a line-drive single in the fourth inning) and that was my only bad pitch of the game. I spotted my fastball and Ronnie (catcher Ronnie Coombs) did a good job grabbing my curve and holding them up for strikes.”

“His fastball had a lot of movement. It was like a righthander’s slider,” said Bangor’s Scott Shaw.

Old Town-Orono gave Sibley all the runs he was to need in the first inning when they touched up Josh Pressley and reliever Chad Scripture for six runs.

Two walks, Andy Trice’s infield single and a bases-loaded walk to Coombs produced the first run before Shane McCannell’s RBI single and Chris Bagley’s two-run single chased Pressley. Evan Stinson capped the rally with a two-run single.

Every starter had at least one hit and one RBI for the Twins.

In the nightcap, McEwen, who had pitched only 17 innings during the regular season, struck out six and walked four in his nine-inning performance. And two terrific defensive plays by second baseman Kinney, one by center fielder Josh Jamieson and one by left fielder Andy Robichaud robbed the Falcons of at least three runs.

“I’m not overpowering so I needed the guys to play great defense behind me and they did. I was happy to get the win because it gets us to the state tournament,” McEwen said.

Brewer took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Solovei doubled home Tony Brigalli. But Bangor answered with three runs in the bottom of the first on consecutive singles by McEwen, Eric Murray, Jamieson (RBI) and Tony Fernandez, a botched pickoff and Chris McGillicuddy’s RBI fielder’s choice.

Brewer tied it in the fifth on a single by Brigalli, Solovei’s RBI base hit, a walk and shortstop Scott Shaw’s throwing error. But second baseman Kinney ranged far to his right to throw out Stewart and prevent the go-ahead run from scoring.

Robichaud’s diving catch in left-center in the seventh and his throw to first for a double play ruined a potential rally for the Falcons.

After Bangor scored the winning run in the seventh on McEwen’s single and stolen base and Fernandez’s towering two-out fly ball double to right center, Jamieson saved the lead with his great play in the eighth.

With two on, Mike Tardif ripped a drive into the right-center field gap. The speedy Jamieson snared the ball with a full dive.

“I knew I had a chance at it because the ball was hanging up tonight,” Jamieson said.
