Power outage delays L.L. Bean services

FREEPORT (AP) — Catalog shoppers from L.L. Bean may notice a slight delay in receiving their merchandise over the next few days after a power outage prevented about 1,000 employees from working.

The outage Sunday night and Monday shut down L.L. Bean’s headquarters and distribution facility, said company spokeswoman Enid Stepner. Workers at the distribution center were unable to package catalog orders and route them for shipping.

However, the outage did not affect incoming catalog orders because the company’s telephone centers are located in Portland and Lewiston. The retail store also remained open.

The main electrical line carrying power to most of the buildings on Casco Street malfunctioned Sunday morning. Electricians for the company and Central Maine Power were unable to fix the problem until 4:45 p.m. Monday.

Employees do not work at the facilities on Sunday, so Monday’s shift was the only disruption.

L.L. Bean is lucky the outage happened at some time other than the busy Christmas season, Stepner said.
