Katahdin High School athletic director Phil Faulkner isn’t ready to push the panic button yet.

Eleven days before the official start of the high school soccer season in Eastern Maine, Katahdin still does not have a boys varsity soccer coach on its staff.

The position has been posted, applications have been received, and interviews are being set up, according to Faulkner.

“I don’t know what they’re going to do,” Faulkner said, referring to the school administration. “We have had some interviews for a few teaching positions and I think they’ve had some soccer background. I’m a little worried, but (the administration) doesn’t seem to be.”

Faulkner said the coaching duo of Dick Barstow and Bill Robinson could not return for the 1994 season. Barstow is taking a break from year-round coaching while Robinson wants to watch his daughters play this season.

“Those guys did a great job for us and we’re looking to continue the success we’ve had up here with our soccer programs,” Faulkner said, not yet worried about who will coach his boys soccer team.

The Penobscot Valley High School girls soccer team, with an eye on the future, has reached back into its past.

Harold Whitten, who led the Howlers to three state championships during the 1980s, returns as head of the girls soccer program at PVHS.

“I just wanted to get back into it,” said Whitten, who is coming back from an eight-year absence. “I like a challenge and we’ve got a good nucleus of kids coming back. Winning and losing will take care of itself if you work hard and have a positive attitude.”

Whitten had retired from coaching for personal reasons.

Longtime youth soccer coach and official Chuck Seguin enters the world of high school soccer this season as the new head coach at Old Town High School.

Seguin, who most recently coached at Center Drive School in Orrington, has been involved in the YMCA soccer program, the Penobscot Soccer Club, and the Central Maine Summer Soccer League. He is also a Level I official.

“I’m really excited about it,” Seguin said of his appointment. “We’re looking to start a JV program this year. I expect my role to be teaching skills and teaching tactics about the game. We’re just looking to play the game to the best of our ability.”

Seguin replaces Sam Civiello, who also coaches basketball and boys tennis at the school, and wanted to cut down on his schedule, according to OT AD Bob Lahey.

DIRECT KICKS – Former University of Maine women’s assistant coach Mark Hundhammer was approved as the next varsity boys coach at Bangor High by the school committee on Monday night…. The high school soccer season kicks off its 1994 season on Saturday, Aug. 13, with the 13th annual Aroostook County Soccer Round Robin at Caribou High School. The event, which features 12 boys and 12 girls teams, will begin at 11:45 a.m. and features each team playing six 12 minute games.
