Winslow runs by Stearns

The two-time defending state Class B champion Winslow Black Raiders ran their unbeaten streak to 25 games on Saturday with a 22-6 victory over Stearns High School highlighting schoolboy football action held around the region Saturday.

In other action, Brewer vs. Dexter, Messalonskee pounded Rockland 51-8, Waterville bested Cheverus 27-6, and Thornton Academy held off a surprising Oxford Hills 32-21.

Black Raiders 22, Minutemen 6

At Poulin Field in Winslow, sophomore quarterback Ruben Lemelin rushed for one touchdown and passed for another to lead the Black Raiders to the season-opening win.

After Winslow jumped out to a 2-0 first-quarter lead on a safety, Lemelin pushed the lead to 8-0, scoring on a one-yard dive. The TD was set up by a 35-yard halfback option pass from Chris Houston to Mike Cassidy.

In the third quarter, Lemelin gave Winslow some breathing room, connecting with Jay Roy on an 8-yard scoring pass, making it 15-0.

Stearns got on the board in the fourth quarter when Adam Greenlaw found Josh Howes on a 35-yard pass for a TD.

Winslow’s Chris Houston (137 yards on 27 carries) closed out the scoring with a 4-yard TD run.

Witches 42, Tigers 0

At Dexter, Brewer’s Chad Allen carried the ball 12 times for 223 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the the visiting Witches to the big victory.

Allen scored Brewer’s first four TDs, on runs of 5, 20, 8 and 2 yards. Dakota Therrien added a 59-yard TD run while Damon Wilson returned an interception 30 yards for another score.

Eric Duffy also had 62 yards on six carries for the Witches.

At Rockland, senior tailback Brad Ulmer scored on TD runs of 2, 4, and 9 yards to lead the Eagles to the victory.

Messalonskee of Oakland also got rushing scores out of Ben Pierce (12-yard run) and Brad Rodrigue (7-yard run). and SomebodySilker (5-yard run). Blair Doucette hit Cory King for a 38-yard pass also for the Eagles.

Rockland’s Chris Nadeau scored on a 1-yard run.

At Portland’s Fitzpatrick Stadium, Bruce Genest rushed for 118 yards and three TDs to lead the defending Pine Tree Conference champs to the victory.

Genest scored on runs of 1 and 55 yards and also caught a 9-yard scoring strike from QB Brian Scott to lead the Panthers to the win.

Scott also threw a 47-yard scoring pass to Kevin Browne to open the scoring with 2:00 left in the first.

For Cheverus, QB Kevin MacDonald scored on a 1-yard TD run.

Trojans 32, Vikings 21

At Hill Stadium in Saco, Thornton Academy’s team effort finally overcame the one-man show of Oxford Hills’ running back Jeremy Tardiff.

While Tardif was racking up 175 yards on 15 carries, along with TD runs of 53, 15, and 46 yards, TA’s Trojans were answering each and every score.

After Tardiff went 53 yards to give OH a 7-0 lead, the Trojans answered when Jason Boudrean recovered an errant pitch in the end zone.

Tardiff again scored to make it 14-6, but TA’s quarterback Andy Burgess scored on back-to-back TD runs of 1 and 2 yards to give Thornton the lead.

Burgess later added another score.
