BANGOR – Bangor High School junior striker Julie Murray called it “pay back time.”

The Bangor girls soccer team avenged three 1-0 losses to Hampden Academy, including a painful Class A quarterfinal playoff loss last fall and a preseason setback, as sophomore midfielder Cathy Flemming broke a 2-2 tie with 18:20 left to lead the Rams to a 4-2 win Monday.

Flemming scored just 18 seconds after Hampden’s Ali Hathaway equalized. Sarah Parcak added an insurance goal 11 minutes later.

“After they scored, I said to myself `We can’t lose to them again.’ So I thought I’d try a move I use in practice where I go down the field, go around some people and take a long shot,” said Flemming.

Flemming took a Brooks Deering pass 35 yards out and weaved left to right into the penalty area before striking a 10-yarder into the side netting to the goalie Shilo Marden’s right.

“I had to jump over a few people and I was closer than I thought I’d be,” said Flemming.

“She did a great job turning on the ball and she made a heckuva shot,” said Hampden coach Randy Dodge.

Parcak used her exceptional speed to cement the win, taking a Flemming pass on the left wing, blowing past a defender and blasting a rising 14-yarder into the far corner.

Becky Fraser converted a Kara Tinkham cross to stake Hampden to a 1-0 lead but Murray equalized by roofing a loose ball fumbled by Marden later in the first half.

A neatly-conceived passing play from Parcak to Jill Partridge to Murray gave Bangor a 2-1 lead in the second half before Hathaway’s 30-yard floater tied it.

Alison Manowski made four saves on 19 Hampden shots for 3-1 Bangor while Marden had 11 stops on 28 shots for 2-2 Hampden.
