NEWPORT — The first Newport Area Kiwanis Club Walk for Health will get under way at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Key Bank parking lot.

All proceeds from the five kilometer Walk for Health will go towards the Nokomis Regional High School scholarship fund. Traditionally, the Kiwanis Club awards two scholarships to deserving students through various fundraising activities.

More than $800 worth of prizes have been donated to the walkers who raise the most contributions for the scholarship fund. These include a Sega Genesis video entertainment system, two nights at the Devlin House in Greenville, two bicycles, and a whitewater rafting trip.

In addition, dozens of gift certificates to local businesses have been donated.

The route of the walk starts at Key Bank, goes up Main Street, makes a loop in the vicinity of the Grove Street playground and returns via Water Street and High Street, back to Key Bank.

Water, health snacks and juices will be provided for walkers. Registration forms are available from Key Bank, People’s Heritage Bank, the Newport Chiropractic Health Center, the Rolling Thunder Express, Nokomis Regional High School and Newport Elementary and Junior High Schools.
