Allison Andrews, 14, of Hudson and her Arabian horse, Countess Naseen, represented Penobscot County on the Maine 4-H horse team at the Eastern States Exposition held recently in Springfield, Mass. Andrews won a blue Danish ribbon in fitting and showing, red Danish ribbons in pleasure and equitation and placed ninth in a field of 28 in command. She is a freshman at Central High School in East Corinth and has been a member of 4-H for seven years.

Volunteer of the Year awards were presented to one member from each of three counties at the Kno-Wal-Lin Volunteer Auxiliary 12th annual luncheon Sept. 29 in Rockland. Mary Maddox of Camden for Knox County; Ann Bixler of Belfast for Waldo County and Carolyn Gray of Jefferson for Lincoln County received a certificate from Gov. John McKernan, a plaque and tote bag. Members of the auxiliary, founded in 1981, visit homebound patients, sew, knit, do office tasks and contribute special medical equipment to Kno-Wal-Lin.

Dr. Michael B. Bruehl of Orono Family Medicine attended the 46th annual scientific assembly of the American Academy of Family Physicians in Boston Sept. 22-25. More than 5,000 family physicians participated in the continuing medical education meeting and heard discussion about the latest health care topics including domestic violence, respiratory infections in children, hormone replacement therapy and breast cancer, urgent eye problems and chemical dependency.

The highest honor of Scottish Rite, Freemasonry was conferred on Merrill R. Bradford Jr. of Bangor, Henry R. Carey of Thomaston and Charles E. Ridlon of Yarmouth on Sept. 27 in Cleveland at the annual session of the Supreme Council Scottish Rite Freemasonry for the Northern Jurisdiction. The Thirty-third Degree is awarded for “outstanding service to Freemasonry or for significant contributions to humanity, reflecting credit upon the Fraternity.” Elected a new director at the same session was Walter K. Webber of Portland, and Gerald C. Pickard of Bangor was installed as a State Scottish Rite Deputy.
