HAMPDEN – Denise Hewes scored her third goal of the game with 4:24 left in the first sudden-death overtime period to give Brewer a 3-2 schoolgirl soccer win over Hampden Academy in a pre-preliminary playoff matchup Tuesday between schools that finished tied for ninth place.

Hewes staked the Witches to a 2-0 lead with two first-half goals and ended the contest when she took a cross from Monica Higgins, went around a fallen keeper, and walked the ball into the left side of the net. Junior sweeper Amanda Sevigny assisted on the first goal.

Goalie Heather Hogan backstopped the win, making 17 saves on 31 shots.

The Witches still led 2-0 with 17 minutes left in the game when Bethany Atkins pulled the Broncos to within 2-1 on a penalty kick. Amy-Jo Crawford scored the equalizer from a crowd in front of the goal with about seven minutes left in regulation.

Shilo Marden made 13 saves on 18 shots in goal.

Brewer, now 8-5-2, earned a berth in the preliminary round at Presque Isle against the eighth-seeded Wildcats at on Thursday at 3 p.m. The Broncos finished at 7-6-2.
