Owls advance with prelim win

Three boys teams advanced through the preliminary round of the schoolboy soccer tournament Wednesday and earned the right to face the top seed in their respective classes on Friday or Saturday.

The prelims, which matched the eighth and ninth seeds, saw No. 8 Cony of Augusta down Hampden 3-1 in Class A, No. 8 Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield battle past Medomak Valley 3-2 in overtime in Class B, and No. 9 Madawaska earning a mild upset of the seeds with a 3-1 victory over Lee Academy in Class C.

Cony will travel to Topsham to take on No. 1 Mount Ararat, 11-3. Madawaska heads to Guilford to face top-seeded Piscataquis Community, which has only one loss to go with 13 wins. And MCI earned the right to face off against 10-1-3 Hermon on the road.

The girls prelim between No. 9 Brewer and No. 8 Presque Isle was postponed until Thursday. The Witches will head to the County for a 3 p.m. showdown.

Madawaska 3, Lee 1

At Dyer Brook, Mike Lavertu scored the first goal of the game and added an assist two goals later as Madawaska put away Lee.

Randy Burgoin and Chris Garon also scored for 7-8 Madawaska. Ben Dyer picked up an assist.

For Lee, now 8-7, Thomas Cormier had an unassisted goal to tie the game at one with 20 minutes left in the first half. Goalkeeper Jon Cole made six saves on 11 shots.

Ryan Cyr stopped seven out of the 13 shots he faced for Madawaska.

Cony 3, Hampden 1

At Augusta, Justin Cuevas scored two goals in the first half to help pace Cony in its win over Hampden.

Todd Waldron had scored the first goal for the 7-5-3 Rams off an assist by Jason Moore.

Brandon Leyro tied the game 27 minutes later for Hampden, who finishes at 5-7-3. Cony answered with the two Cuevas goals, one of which included a Chris Ramage assist.

Goalkeeper Mike Greve made four saves on seven shots for Cony.

For Hampden, Aaron Peppard stopped 13 of the 20 shots he faced in goal.

Waldron also had an assist for Cony.
