Port group receives recognition for its work

EASTPORT — The Eastport Port Authority has won the 1994 Washington County Economic Development Initiative Award presented by the Down East Resource, Conservation and Development Council of Cherryfield.

Brian Nutter, director of the Port Authority, said the DERCDC believed that the work done on port development had accomplished more than any other individual project in the county.

“Maybe not (in creating) economic development, because we are still in the planning and development stages, but to prepare for things to come,” he said.

Nutter and other members of the Port Authority, have worked for several years to develop a new port for Estes Head in Eastport. Access to the city’s present port area is through narrow downtown streets that at times are severely congested. The new port facility would be located within the city limits, but away from the downtown area.

The new facility will include a larger deep-water port, warehouses and an industrial park.

The letter of presentation said the port authority had been recognized for its efforts to make the public and appropriate agencies a part of the development process.

“Proper site selection and planning are critical to wise resource development. The Eastport Port Authority, with Brian Nutter’s assistance, have employed a model process and example for economic growth and development in their preparation for a new port facility and marine industrial park for Washington County,” the letter said.
