Churches plan crusades and missions

Maine churches have scheduled crusades, missions and other activities in the coming weeks:

Indian Island — Public lectures on “Spirituality — A Facet of Wellness,” will be given at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 25-26, in the parish hall at St. Ann’s Church on Indian Island.

The presenter will be Sister Maurice Doody, a Dominican nun from the Bronx. She has given public lectures, parish retreats and other activities for people from many faiths. She works with the Office of New Directions, which helps priests, brothers and women religious recover from addictions.

All are welcome to attend. A freewill offering will be received.

Bangor — Dr. John Avanzini, known to millions of television viewers as Brother John, will lead a seminar 6-10 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, Oct. 26-28, at Door of Faith Center, 131 Main St.

Previously a local pastor, Avanzini since 1985 has been a traveling Bible teacher with a worldwide audience. He is the author of 13 books, including “Rapid Debt Reduction Strategies.” Others include “It’s Not Working, Brother John,” and “The Principles of Increase.”

He has been ministering with Paul and Jan Crouch since the inception of Trinity Broadcasting Network. His program, “The Principles of Biblical Economics,” is seen four times daily on that network. His wife, Patricia, also participates in television ministry.

Bucksport — The Pilgrim Rosary and a statue of Our Lady of Mejugorje will be featured in a day of prayer on Saturday, Oct. 29, at St. Vincent De Paul Church in Bucksport.

The speaker will be Richard Bingold of Syracuse, N.Y., who is involved in the Marian Center of Central New York. He made the Pilgrim Rosary from stones he found on Apparition Hill, where six youths said the Virgin Mary first appeared to them in 1981. Bingold said that one of the rocks resembled the human heart aflame “as if to symbolize that Mary’s heart is the open door that will lead us to the Sacred Heart of Her Son.”

The schedule will be: 11 a.m., procession and Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary; noon, Angelus and Sorrowful Mysteries; 1 p.m., Glorious Mysteries; 2 p.m., lunch of soup and sandwiches; 3 p.m., Reconciliation; 4 p.m., Mass; 5 p.m., healing service; refreshments afterward. There will be talks and music after each prayer time. A program will also be held on Oct. 28 in Ellsworth, and on Oct. 30 in Bar Harbor. For information, call 469-2329.

Brewer — The Truth in Action drama team from Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C., will present “The Brevity of Life” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Twin City Baptist Church, 559 North Main St., Brewer. For information, call 989-6852.

The six-member team begins with a sermon of Dr. Bob Jones Sr., “The Two Roads of Life,” presented in readers’ theater. The second portion is a drama focusing on an emergency medical technician and a recently converted teen-ager.

Warren — The Truth in Action drama team will present “The Brevity of Life” at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at Calvary Baptist Church in Warren. For information, call 273-2061.

Hodgdon — The Truth in Action drama team will present “The Brevity of Life” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, at East Hodgdon Bible Church. For information, call 532-9331.

Dover-Foxcroft — A four-day missions conference will be held Oct. 23-26 at Dover-Foxcroft Assembly of God on East Main Street. Meeting times will be 6 p.m. Sunday, and 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

The conference will begin during regular worship at 10:45 a.m. Sunday with a sermon on “Our Pentecost Mission” by the pastor, Tom Bruce. The Rev. Sarah Burt, missions director and teacher at Faith School of Theology, will speak that evening on short-term missions to Mexico, Honduras, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.

A Teen Challenge representative from Houlton will speak Monday. The Tuesday program will feature Harold Morin discussing his missionary work in Bangladesh and the Philippines. Mrs. Andrew Torbett will speak on Wednesday, telling about her family’s work in New Guinea and a Navajo reservation in the Southwest.

Mars Hill — The Rev. Malcolm Preble will be guest speaker at the fall convention of the Mars Hill Full Gospel Assembly, to be held Wednesday, Oct. 26, through Sunday, Oct. 30.

Preble, a full-time evangelist from Charleston, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; 3 p.m. Friday; and 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday. Preble was formerly a Bible school and evangelism instructor and pastor.

His wife, Dorene, has been in music ministry for 20 years, arranging and writing songs and accompanying them. Daughter Julianna is the lead singer in the trio.

A Zion Alumni service with the Rev. Cliv Meidahl will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. Guest speaker at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, will be the Rev. Doug Crandall, pastor of Zion Gospel Temple. A fellowship supper will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, and a supper at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.
