CARIBOU — Three people escaped serious injury Saturday in an accident at a Caribou intersection which resulted in nearly $6,000 in damage.
The cause of the accident remained under investigation this weekend. Determining who was at fault might be difficult, noted patrolman Kevin St. Peter of the Caribou Police Department. Both drivers claimed they had the green light when they reached the intersection of Fort Street and U.S. Route 1 at 9:50 a.m., St. Peter said.
Joseph Charlong, 38, of Campbellton, New Brunswick, was traveling south on U.S. Route 1 and 85-year-old James Leavitt of Caribou was heading east on Fort Street when their vehicles collided.
St. Peter said Charlong’s 1986 Pontiac two-door sedan struck the front passenger side of Leavitt’s 1982 Ford four-door automobile.
Charlong and his passenger, 35-year-old Darlene Pelletier of Glencoe, New Brunswick, were wearing seat belts when the accident occurred. Charlong was not injured. Pelletier complained of pain from being thrown against her side of the car but did not require medical attention.
It was unclear if Leavitt, who was traveling alone in his car and who also escaped injury, was wearing his safety belt when the accident occurred.
St. Peter estimated damage to the front end of Charlong’s vehicle at $4,000. Leavitt’s vehicle sustained about $1,500 in damage, mostly to its left front section.
Craig Peterson, also of the Caribou Police Department, assisted in the investigation.
