The matchups for Saturday’s Eastern Maine regional championships were finalized on Wednesday with the completion of semifinal schoolgirl soccer action around Eastern Maine.
In Class A, sixth-seeded Cony of Augusta knocked off No. 2 Morse of Bath with a 4-3 double-overtime victory in one semifinal while defending state champion Mount Ararat, the No. 1 seed, posted a 2-0 victory over No. 5 Messalonskee of Oakland.
In Class B, No. 4 Hermon ended the Cinderella run of No. 8 Bucksport with a 2-1 victory while second-seeded Orono ran past No. 6 Mount Desert Island 3-0.
Top-seeded Hodgdon posted a 2-0 victory over Fort Fairfield in one semifinal of the Class C ranks while No. 3 Katahdin of Sherman Station knocked off second-seeded Schenck 2-0.
In Class D, No. 2 Ashland had to go into overtime to dispatch previously unbeaten Greenville, the third seed, 2-1. On Tuesday, Van Buren advanced to the regional final with a 1-0 win over Southern Aroostook.
Saturday’s scheduled regional title games will include Cony at Mount Ararat in Class A; Hermon at Orono in Class B; Katahdin at Hodgdon in Class C; and Ashland at Van Buren in Class D.
Class A
Cony 4, Morse 3 (2 OT)
At Bath, Christine Huber scored all four goals, including the game-winner with 1:23 left in the second overtime, as the Rams improved to 12-3-1 with the upset win.
Jen Dillihunt, Laurie Dermott and Jen Globensky had assists for Cony of Augusta. Rae-Ann Demos made 10 saves on 20 shots.
Amy Harrington scored two goals and Amanda Montgomery added another for the 11-2-2 Shipbuilders. Caroline Chapin had an assist, while Molly Leopin made six stops on 12 shots.
Mount Ararat 2, Messalonskee 0
At Topsham, Carissa Stewart stopped all six shots she faced to lead Mount Ararat to the semifinal win over Messalonskee in a battle of Eagles.
For the home Eagles, 15-1, Sherry McQuaid and Heather Totten scored the goals while Heather Skillings dished out an assist.
For Messalonskee, 10-4-1, Karyn McMullin had 13 saves on 15 shots.
Class B
Hermon 2, Bucksport 1
At Hermon, Liza Doughty converted a Heather Pace feed into the game-winning goal with 20 minutes left to give Hermon the victory.
Pace staked the Hawks to a 1-0 lead, scoring off a Jen Stewart assist with 29:12 left in the first half. Hawk goalkeeper Pam Poland made three saves on five shots for the 8-6-2 winners.
For Bucksport, Katie Pelletier tied the game early in the second half off a pass from Megan Smith. Karrie Hoke made 10 saves on 15 shots.
Class C
Katahdin 2, Schenck 0
At East Millinocket, the Cougars from Sherman Station pulled the upset, downing the defending state Class C champs behind a goal and an assist from Jodi Dyer.
Ginger Dyer scored the first goal for 9-3-2 Katahdin, with 13 minutes left in the first half. Jodi Dyer’s goal came with six minutes remaining in the game. Carrie Jo McNally made eight saves on 11 shots in goal to post the shutout.
Holly Rosebush made six stops on eight shots for the 13-3 Wolverines.
Hodgdon 2, Fort Fairfield 0
At Hodgdon, Wendy Ivey scored one goal and assisted on another while Jodi Quint was perfect in goal to lead the host Hawks to the win.
Amy Quint also had a goal while Kerri Ivey added an assist. Jodi Quint stopped all five shots she faced to key the 14-1 Hawks.
For Fort Fairfield, 8-6-2, Devin Jewett made 15 saves on 20 shots.
Class D
Ashland 2, Greenville 1 (2 OT)
At Ashland, Celeste Michaud scored both goals, the first to tie the game midway through the second half and the second with 6:56 left in the second overtime as the Hornets downed previously undefeated Greenville.
Michaud’s overtime winner came after she had been stopped on a penalty kick midway through the first extra period. Erin Soucy assisted on the first goal for 10-3-2 Ashland, while Alicia Michaud made six saves on 14 shots in goal.
Chrissie Giroux scored a first-half goal on a feed by Amanda Graham for the 14-1 Lakers. Sara Ward made 13 saves on 23 shots.
