Students from Limestone Community School and Calais High School will join others across the state and nation in a school-community mock election Thursday, Nov. 3. Results will be relayed to Bangor where state totals will be compiled and sent to national headquarters. Results will be reported by local TV stations, the Bangor Daily News and C-Span.

Art and humanities students from Bucksport High School attended the Rodin sculpture exhibit at the Portland Museum of Art recently. On display this month at BHS are art works by students Jessie Gifford and Jared Zimmerman.

Students Against Driving Drunk have chosen Meghan O’Neill, Bobbi-Jo Fairbrother, Elisha Perkins and Jessica Wilson as members of this year’s Leadership Council at Bucksport High School. More than 60 members of SADD will promote the message, “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk,” to members of the student body and community.

Mark Bennett, a senior at Searsport District High School, was selected Student of the Month for September. The award is presented to a student who best demonstrates academic progress, school citizenship, personal deportment and participation in outside activities. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Bennett of Stockton Springs.

Ellen Cottrell, a junior at Bucksport High School, has been chosen by the English department to compete in the National Council of Teachers of English writing competition next spring. She is the daughter of Bob and Cleo Cottrell of Verona.

Six Bucksport High School students attended an engineering career exploration seminar Oct. 16 sponsored by the University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation. James Dugas, Jared Hanson, Don McCann, Mike Nason, Neil Raymond and Phil Saunders also visited engineers at work at Champion International and attended an open house at the college of engineering.

Six junior and senior high school students from Penobscot and Hancock counties were among 24 who participated in the Young Scholars Program last summer at the University of Maine, Orono. Kim Fairbrother of Bucksport, Jodie McErlain of Springfield, Elisabeth Morse of Bangor, Rachel Pilling of Deer Isle, Adrian Smith of Newburgh and Elizabeth Wilson of Surry were introduced to various aspects of engineering during their three-week stay. The program is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, assisted by National Semiconductor in South Portland.
