PRESQUE ISLE – Chris Casavant hit two straight baskets with three minutes left in the game to snap a tie and the University of Maine-Presque Isle went on to capture the 14th Star City Invitational with a 93-87 men’s basketball win over the Husson College Braves Saturday night.

Simon Mitchell and Jamie Davis-Goff combined to make six-of-seven free throws in the last two minutes to seal the win for UMPI. Mitchell, the tourney’s MVP, finished with 25 points and All-Tourney selection Casavant added 19. Davis-Goff chipped in with 14 points.

Bryan Jefferson paced the Braves of Bangor with 23 points, Obadiah Johnson added 17, and Xavier Joyner put in 14.

In the consolation game, Thomas College of Waterville defeated the College of St. Joseph’s of Rutland, Vt., 80-68.

Chris Pearce scored 16 for Thomas and Mason Dixon added 14. John Lyons paced St. Joe’s with 25 points.

Jefferson, Joyner, Lyons, and Pearce were named to the All-Tourney team.

At Unity, Jason Powers scored 26 points and the Golden Eagles outscored the Rams 14-4 over the final 3:30 to win the Unity Tip Off Tournament.

Jason Harmon added 13 points for the winners, while James Harmon and Eric Shaw scored 12 points each.

Mike Jack tossed in five three-pointers and finished with 27 points for Unity. Dale Black added 17 and Jamey McNally netted 16.

UMFK wins Bengal Tipoff

At Fort Kent, Alton Jones of the University of Maine-Fort Kent scored 23 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as the Bengals posted a 91-68 win over Southern Maine Technical College of South Portland Sunday.

The College de Maisonnevve of Montreal beat Central Maine Technical College of Auburn 72-56 in the consolation game.

In the championship, Chris Sutton had 21 points for the 5-2 Bengals. Warren Guy and Eric Vallecillo scored 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Fred Reeder led 1-2 SMTC with 19 points. Greg Smith had 17 and Scott Bessey 10.

On Saturday, Chris Sutton led the Bengals with 24 points in a 99-60 victory over Central Maine Tech.

Ulysses Garrett had 14, Jones 13, and Guy 11 for UM-Fort Kent.

Steve Rumilard had 22 for the Mustangs. Fred Caborne and Doug McAllister each scored 10.

Husson wins Star City title

Sue Ann Allen scored 21 points and Stacy Hafford added 16 more as Husson College posted a 77-54 win over the University of Maine-Presque Isle in the championship game of the Star City Shootout Sunday.

Tracy Parker and Beth Miller netted 10 points apiece for the winners.

Kelly Picard scored 11 points and Michelle Davis had 10 for the Owls.

Hafford was named the tournament’s most valuable player, while Parker, Davis, Keli Daigle of UMPI, Danielle Dupuis of Thomas and Heather Muzzerall of the College of St. Joseph’s made the All-Tourney team.

In the consolation game, Thomas downed the College of St. Joseph’s 86-66 behind Tee Fecteau’s 27 points.

Women’s hockey

Colby women finish second

At Minneapolis, Minn., University of New Hampshire goaltender Dina Solimina held Colby to just a single goal and the Wildcats won the All-American Tournament championship 4-1 Sunday.

Solimina made 12 saves in net for 3-0 New Hampshire.

Meaghan Sittler scored her fourth goal in two days for 2-1 Colby. Goalie Marie Polichronopoulous made 39 saves.
