BANGOR – The city of Bangor is looking to make a splash in the world of national championship sporting events.
The Bangor Convention & Visitors Bureau has announced that an official bid to host the U.S. Synchronized Swimming Championships in October of 1997 has been made to the United States Synchronized Swimming Organization.
According to a press release, the Bureau is working closely with the University of Maine, to utilize the Wallace Pool for approximately five days during this championship event.
The championship meet, which could attract more than 250 swimmers, along with their coaches and families, will also help Bangor’s effort to host other groups in the future.
Several other bids will be going to various committees for events such as canoeing and kayaking, rollerblading, other synchronized swimming events, and figure skating.
The Bureau also said it would be working with other Maine communities, like Augusta, Portland, and the Bar Harbor area, while possibly hosting these events.
