Opening the mail addressed to the Santa’s Helper Fund is like receiving annual Christmas cards from old friends. Many of the names have become familiar over the years because those people have consistently supported the Salvation Army through Santa’s Helper. Veteran contributors are the backbone of the fund’s success.
Donations big and small are gratefully welcomed. They may come in the form of a collection of pennies carefully rolled by a child, a few dollars budgeted out of a fixed income, or a large check from an organization that has raised the funds through projects. No donation is less important than any other, and they all represent the spirit of the holidays — sharing with those in need.
It has long been the custom of the Bangor Daily News to publish the names of donors and the amount they contributed. The idea is not to compare one donation with another, but to emphasize that each donation received is important and appreciated. Of course, anyone may request that a name be withheld from the newspaper.
Recent contributors include Eleanor M. Brown, Brewer, $10; Sherbie and Pauline Mayhew, Milford, $50; Karen Hultzen Belleau and Dean Ridlon, Bangor, $50; Anonymous, Machias, $100; Anonymous, Orono, $5; Anonymous, Millinocket, $25; Arthur Martin, Orono, $100; Anonymous, Bangor, $200; Doris-Ann Gray, Milford, in memory of Frank E.
