Aquaculture boat missing in storm

EASTPORT — Officials of Conners Aquaculture Inc. of Estes Head were still searching late Friday afternoon for one of the company’s power boats that was discovered missing from its moorings in Broad Cove at 6 that morning.

Merrill Lank, a representative of the Atlantic salmon farm, told Coast Guard officials Friday that the 36-foot diesel-powered boat apparently had broken its rope moorings either Thursday night or before 6 a.m. Friday when he saw the aluminum V-bottom boat was missing. The boat last was seen at 4 p.m. Thursday at its mooring.

Petty Officer Donald Trant of the Coast Guard’s Eastport Station said northwest winds in the Eastport area Friday ranged from 35 to 45 knots, with gusts to 50 knots.

Conners’ representatives conducted a land, water and air search for the boat Friday, but failed to locate the boat that served a variety of uses at the aquaculture farm.
