Probe of Westbrook case in attorney general’s hands

WESTBROOK — The state Attorney General’s Office, not local police, will handle the investigation of an alleged assault on a Westbrook tavern owner by an off-duty Portland police officer, Westbrook Police Chief Steven Roberts says.

Cumberland County District Attorney Stephanie Anderson decided to turn the case over to state investigators to avoid any criticism of a probe conducted by Westbrook police, Roberts said.

Peter Profenno, owner of Profenno’s Restaurant, has said publicly he was trying to make a rowdy group of off-duty Portland officers leave the bar on Dec. 19 when one of them punched him in the mouth.

Profenno, 60, has refused to make an official statement to Westbrook police about the alleged assault. His attorney said Profenno wanted to enjoy the New Year’s holiday before making a statement.
