In a recent (BDN, Jan. 19) story, J. Barney Rier of the SAD 19 (Lubec) Board of Directors was quoted as saying that “the board had recently been advised by the Maine School Management Association to cut administrative costs by eliminating the two contracts,” i.e., school principal and special education director. Our association gave no such advice to Lubec, nor do we advise school boards anywhere in Maine on the elimination of staff positions. The MSMA is simply not in a position to collect and evaluate the information necessary to make those determinations. That can only be done locally, and the process normally results in superintendents making well-informed recommendations to the local school boards. Paul E. Brunelle Executive director Maine School Management Association Augusta
