Stars & Stripes wins one, loses one

SAN DIEGO – Stars & Stripes was a winner and a loser Monday in a close day of racing in the America’s Cup trials.

Stars & Stripes, skippered by Dennis Conner, beat the all-women America3 crew by 28 seconds to keep its lead in the Citizen Cup for defenders. But Conner also lost the two points he earned in a win over America3 on Friday.

That’s because the second round-robin between the three defense syndicates was shortened from nine races to six because of weather delays, and the set of three races that was thrown out included Conner’s win on Friday.

There have been three weather delays since Wednesday, two coming in the set that was eliminated.

The other weather delay was Saturday, the first race of the final set of races. Because there are only two reserve racing days, the priority goes to the set of races that is closest to completion. So Saturday’s race between America3 and Young America, which was postponed by fog, will be sailed on Tuesday.

That will complete the round-robin with each syndicate having sailed against its opponents just twice instead of the scheduled three times.

Conner retained a 9-7 lead over Young America, with America holding third wi

On the challengers’ course, Rioja de Espana nearly upset France 3, but lost its lead during a tacking duel on the fifth leg and dropped its 11th straight race, by 22 seconds.
