Bangor rolls to crown

BANGOR – It’s easy to see how Bangor won by a 141-point margin during Saturday’s Penobscot Valley Conference boys swimming and diving championships.

The 16th annual competition, held at the Bangor YWCA, featured a Bangor boys team that won eight of the 12 events, including both relays.

Junior Chris Falk led the powerful attack with first-place ribbons in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, and he swam legs in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.

Senior Dan Reid and junior Matt Cook were also outstanding swimmers for Bangor. Reid gave Bangor victories in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke and also swam in the 200 medley relay. Cook was victorious in the 100 and 200 freestyle races while also swimming a leg in the 400 free relay.

Fifteen-time PVC champion Bangor scored 438 points to second place Old Town’s 297. Mount Desert Island finished third with 175 points, host Brewer was fourth with 131, and John Bapst rounded out the top five with 98.

“Usually it’s either Old Town or us,” said Bangor coach Phil Emery about this annual meet. “We wanted to swim well and win, but not get too excited about the meet, because the state competition is only a week away.”

Did Bangor acomplish this goal? “We swam very well,” Emery said.

Other impressive swimmers included Old Town sophomore Josh Lizzotte, who won the diving and swam on both of Old Town’s relay teams, and David Blaney, a sophomore from MDI, who finished first in the 50 freestyle and helped Mount Desert win the 200 free relay.
