DOVER-FOXCROFT — Lifeline, a personal emergency response system, is in full swing at Mayo Regional Hospital.

One of the services offered by the hospital, Lifeline provides senior citizens and the medically vulnerable with a device, that when activated, summons assistance in an emergency.

Beverly Wolf, the hospital’s coordinator of the service, told HAD 4 directors Wednesday that 88 units were being used in the hospital’s service area.

While the service costs subscribers either $32 or $42 a month, depending upon the model they select, the installation of the service is free. Wolf said that five people who have experience in telephone installation volunteer their time to set up the systems for the public.

Subscribers wear a small waterproof device around their necks that when pressed will activate a call to the Lifeline’s command center in Cambridge, Mass.

A representative there will call the subscriber back and ask what kind of help is needed. The command center, in turn, will summon the local help requested.
