MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Huron Tribe used speed and pressure defense to beat the Husson College Braves 99-62 in the first round of the NAIA Division II women’s basketball tourney here Wednesday morning.
The Braves of Bangor had a hard time keeping up with the Tribe and trailed 21-5 after the game’s first five minutes.
Husson ends the season with a 23-6 record.
Huron’s defense stifled the Braves, forcing them into 30 turnovers.
“They showed why they’re No. 7. We’ve got to give them the credit. They played aggressive physical man-to-man all over us,” Husson coach Kissy Walker said. “Even their big players were very athletic.”
Husson’s only lead, a 2-1 margin, came in the first minute of the game. Huron then ran off 15 straight points to build a 16-2 lead that was never threatened.
The Braves turned the ball over 19 times in the first half. The Tribe converted most of the opportunities into points and led 46-23 at the end of the half.
Husson managed to cut the lead to 65-48 when senior guard Sue Ann Allen stole the ball and made a layup with 10:50 left in the game. However, that was the closest the Braves would get.
Huron kept up the pressure and built up its lead the rest of the way. The Tribe shot 55 percent from the field, doing much of the damage in transition.
“Our high point was holding them under 100,” Walker said. “We finished up 23-6. We got to travel. It’s not the way you want to go out, but there are a lot of positives.”
Senior guard Stacy Hafford led Husson with 18 points and recorded four steals. Stephanie Shaw chipped in with 11 points and Allen added 10.
Jo Ellen Hofer scored 24 to lead Huron, Tiffany Young netted 13 and Angie Kristensen and Laura Stobbs each had 11.
Tara Leavitt grabbed 10 rebounds for the Braves, who outrebounded the Tribe 40-36.
