Bears beat Dayton to get split

OCOEE, Fla. – Black Bear pitcher Cindy Harrington scattered four hits and struck out three Dayton hitters to lead the University of Maine softball team to a 5-1 win over the Flyers, salvaging a split in a pair of games played Monday.

Earlier, Providence defeated Maine 4-0 behind the two-hit pitching of Candi Ericson.

Maine is 7-9 after the day’s action.

In the second game, Melissa Creegan and Kris Gorman paced Maine’s offense, each slapping three singles and scoring a run. Sandy Smith added a pair of singles, as did Nicki Bourget, who drove in a run.

Dayton, 1-5, was paced by pitcher Heather McClinty, who struck out four.

In the opener, Providence roughed up Maine’s Harrington with six hits, including three singles by Beth Miller. Miller also scored a run and had an RBI. Megan Murray added a single and two RBI.
