The game is on.
The University of Maine’s NCAA regional tournament game against the New Hampshire-Denver winner Saturday at 4:30 p.m. will be televised by Maine Broadcasting System.
Both WLBZ (Channel 2) in Bangor and WCSH (Channel 6) in Portland secured the TV rights to the game after their bids were picked by the NCAA TV rights committee Tuesday morning.
“I’m glad we’re able to give UMaine the statewide coverage we think they deserve,” said Mike Marshall, program director at WCSH.
MBS will take the audio-video feed provided by the NCAA. The NCAA handles production and picks announcers for the regional and Final Four games.
“They won’t let you have your own announcers,” Marshall explained. “You have to take the feed, the announcers… the whole thing.”
WLBZ beat out WVII (Channel 7), the only other Bangor-market station to submit a bid. Mashall said he didn’t think any other Portland station bid on the game.
Fresh off winning the rights to broadcast the Maine-Connecticut NCAA women’s tournament game last Thursday, WABI (Channel 5) elected not to submit a bid for the hockey game this time around.
“We talked about it, but we decided we really didn’t want to disrupt the CBS NCAA tournament schedule,” said Steve Hiltz, WABI’s program director. “That and the fact we figured other local networks would bid for the game were reasons enough not to put in a bid.”
