Cushman wins Passy race

WALDO – The water may have been low but everyone made it through the 23rd annual Passagassawakeag River Race in Waldo Saturday.

The eight-mile course provided some tricky turns and whitewater for the 106 craft but all navigated their way safely, according to organizers.

“You hate to see it that way because it discourages the paddlers but everyone made it,” said Dale Cross, race director.

Winterport’s Kenny Cushman finished first overall in his kayak, with a time of 41 minutes, 35 seconds, 1:17 ahead of fellow kayaker Fred Ludwig of Houlton. Steve Moser of Hampden finished third at 45:22.

The race’s fastest canoe was paddled by Barry Fifield of Gray and Shane Oliver of Topsham who finished fourth overall and first atop the two-man division, with a 45:48 time.
