MINNEAPOLIS – Yale’s Andy Weidenbach scored two first-period goals to lead the East to a 6-2 victory over the West in the third annual Shrine East-West College All-Star Hockey Classic Sunday.
Weidenbach’s two goals capped the East’s first-period onslaught against University of Minnesota goaltender Jeff Callinan, who allowed four goals in the first 10 minutes.
Callinan also surrendered four goals in the third period of Minnesota’s 7-3 loss to Boston University in the NCAA semifinals March 30.
The winning goalie in that game, BU’s Derek Herlossky, stopped 14 of the 15 West shots he faced Sunday. Yale goaltender Todd Sullivan replaced Herlossky and made 20 saves, including three on a flurry early in the third period.
Sullivan said he and Weidenbach struggled to find ice time after Yale’s season ended without an ECAC playoff appearance five weeks ago.
