GORHAM – The University of Maine-Farmington used a solid effort from pitcher Becky Vaughn to beat the University of Southern Maine 10-2 in the first game of their softball twinbill Tuesday, but USM took the second 13-5.

In the first game, Vaughn scattered seven hits while striking out three. Krista Meyer and Nicole Searles each went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. UMF took an early lead in the game, scoring five runs in the second inning.

UMF couldn’t hold a victory for the second game after it broke open early with three runs in the top of the first.

USM broke through with seven runs and six hits in the first. Paula Reed kept Farmington off-balance with six strikeouts. Jen Goyette had three RBIs.
