FARMINGTON – The University of Maine-Farmington’s Andrew Hyde struck out seven Westbrook batters for a 5-2 win, but the Wildcats came back in the second game 7-6 to gain a split of their baseball doubleheader Wednesday.

In the first game, UMF’s Mike Young and Todd Drinkwater each had singles and an RBI in a five-run sixth inning.

In the second game, Westbrook piled up five runs, three unearned, in the first three innings, on five UMF errors.

Westbrook pitcher Bob Davies improved to 1-2 and helped out his own cause with a single, double, and an RBI. Paul Stone and Stan Webb each knocked out two singles and drove in a run.

For the 3-6 Beavers, Brett Witherell hit two singles and an RBI, while Young, Drinkwater, and Scott Dulin each had a single and an RBI.

Softball

Husson sweeps Bowdoin

At Brunswick, Husson swept Bowdoin 11-0 and 6-5 to improve its record to 17-3.

In the first game, Husson’s Amanda Pomerleau threw a two-hitter, blanking the Polar Bears, while going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a single, and two RBI’s.

Emily Burrill cranked out two singles and two RBI’s, as Denise Schrier, Lori Yanush, and Celeste Ross each knocked out two singles and an RBI. Michelle Coogan had two singles, and Jess Moore contributed two RBI’s.

Pomerleau struck out seven and improved to 9-2 while Donna Strohmeyer gave up 13 hits in her first loss.

Husson’s Cara Mercer eeked out a close one in the second, giving up seven hits and striking out three, to up her record to 8-1.

Bowdoin jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first, on the back of Jenn Bowdoin’s first of two doubles on the day, knocking in two runs, and a Jen Fortin hit, which drove in another run.

Husson exploded for four runs with Burrill’s single and two RBI’s, and singles from Moore and Cogan, who also drove in a run. The Braves were assisted by Schrier and Yanush’s stolen bases, three fielder’s choices, a Bowdoin wild pitch and two errors.

Schrier and Yanush each finished with two singles. Celeste Ross knocked out a single and an RBI, as did Amy Dyer for Husson.

Bowdoin’s Erin Collins took the loss, giving up 10 hits, three earned runs, and four wild pitches, and falls to 1-2.

Sam Coyne finished with a double and single, and Jen Fortin had two singles for 3-3 Bowdoin.
